Okay, okay, so I know it is Tuesday, but I wanted to get a jump start on my WANTs for the week.

Before I continue, I’d like to extend a congratulations to Butter for his great linkback on ScienceBlogs.com. Check it out!

Now, down to business. This week, I think I’d like to talk about media conversion. No, not the kind where newspapers need to adapt and become more web-savvy in order to survive. I’m talking about GADGETS!

VIDEO: Ion USB VCR — $279.99 $229.99 @ Think Geek

I ran across this on Think Geek the other day, and I think that those of us with stacks of old VHS tapes (coughcoughBUTTERcoughcough…) would benefit from this. Me, I have several VHS tapes but no working VCR.

This device will allow you to watch, transfer, and convert analog VHS signals to your computer. You can compess them to MPEG4 files, convert them to watch on an iPod, Sony PSP, or any of those proprietory video formats, and will act as a pass-through for other analog video signals that use an RCA jack (like an old non-digital camcorder).

And since VHS is not by nature a high-definition video format, I guess I can live with the measly 720×480 resolution that it puts out. It was, after all, originally encoded on :::shudder::: magnetic tape.

Unfortunately, my Mac won’t read do it. I’d have to find someone with a Windows Machine. And, admittedly, it is a bit pricey. This wouldn’t be worth it unless I had a LOT of VHS tapes to convert.

Which brings me to my next point — this sort of device is impractical, because if it is doing its job, you only have to use it once, right? Once you convert your VHS collection to digital, it just rendered itself worthless.

The best thing to do would be either to: a) split the cost with a group of friends and then take turns using it, or b) buy it and rent it out to people who want to convert their collection as well.

AUDIO: InstantMusic Vinyl and Cassette Ripper — $59.99 @ Think Geek

This is, in my opinion, a bit cooler than the VCR. First off, it is Mac-compatible, which makes my day. You can plug in your turntable or your cassette player, and use the provided software (Acoustica SpinItAgain for Windows and Roxio for Mac) to rip the music, clean the audio, and separate it into tracks for easy CD-burning or iTunes importing.

You can get a USB turntable here, but if you audiophiles have a record collection, presumably you have a turntable to go with it, right?

This is also great for those kitsch music lovers like me, who go to the Goodwill and can find some Xavier Cugat or Ray Conniff records for less than a dollar. Then I can just rip them directly to my ever-expanding iTunes library.

Also a great piece of equipment to share among your friends, but at this price, it’s not too bad for just yourself, either. The only catch: as of the composing of this blog post, it’s out of stock at Think Geek. )-:

Click on the link above to the product page, the description is really funny. It starts off, “Are you the one cracking the technological whip in your family?” That is totally me.

I also seem to have some sort of compulsion to archive and convert old family records to digital. I think I should have been a librarian. Or at least a historical preservationist. But lately I’ve been thinking about the hundreds of old slides from the ’50s in my parents’ basement, and how they’re just wearing out. The celluloid is probably cracking, and the humidity down there is probably making the cardboard casing soggy. And then I look and think about my Flickr Pro account. Then I can add the 2+2 and all that.

This would be perfect for me. It scans negatives and slides in up to and at an extremely high 1821 dpi. Sure, if you have a flatbed scanner, you can futz around with those litte inserts, but that’s a pain in the butt. With this, you just slide it in and push a button. Or, if you like it comes with TWAIN drivers so you can scan directly from Photoshop.

Alas, it is only Windows compatible. Damn you, Bill Gates! And, well, it’s a hundred dollars, and while I am sure it is worth it, I can’t afford that, unless I could get the family to help me out; you know, for preserving the records and whatnot.

I’m sure there’s more to it, but wouldn’t it be cheaper just to buy a TV card, or the USB version thereof ? As long as your audio/video device has composite outs, or even co-ax RF, you can capture it that way…

Hmm… That would probably work, too. Though I’m not sure of it, I bet the extra money you are paying for is the actual VCR part, for those of us who don’t have one. The included software may add some cost, too, although the product page doesn’t give much information about that.
