We all are familiar with my favorite internet meme, LOLcats. Whether or not you call pronounce it to rhyme with “polecats” or spell out the “el-oh-el”, they are cute, funny, and, um, cute.

I want to share my collection of sci-fi related LOLs with you, too. Check these babies out:

I’m not actually sure what this genre is called, but it is the LOLized Battlestar Galactica.

I’m not entirely sure why there is a Cyberman in the corner, but I can only assume someone who isn’t familiar with Doctor Who thought it was an old-school Cylon. After all, there is a big “C” on the chest.And my personal favorite…

The kid is Betty in First Presbyterian Theater’s production this summer of Mister Roberts. She was about five weeks old here, and going through the climbing on things and leaping off them stage.

My neighbor has this feeding dish for the wildlife, but it’s a tad too tall for easy access, so the critters usually end up inside it. I realize that sitting in ur food is only rong by human standards, but still.

Waffles believes LOLcats can contain philosophical lessons, and I agree. This one illustrates the general crappiness of how our universe is set up, and it might make you cry, so I put it below the fold. Warning: Adult NOMing ahead:

This one doesn’t need much analysis, really. I grabbed the (captionless) screencap from this video on YouTube. (Be warned, the peeping goes on for long after the fuzzball has disappeared down the thing’s gullet.) Once in a while I need to make my citified self watch something like this to stay grounded and remind myself that Nature is really a bitch a lot of the time, even though I tend to see only the cute, fuzzy parts. But complete cynicism is a mistake: The beautiful parts are still there and are still enjoyable, and it’s wrong not to protect them when we can. Even the algorithmic evolutionary processes that led to that snake becoming the merciless predator it is are magnificent in their own way.

LOLCat Fridays: Bridging the gap

This is about recovering from drug use. The kitten is on the path to recovery from a hard life addicted to cocaine, or meth (it’s impossible to say which, judging by this picture). He is trying to leave behind his drug-addled world — hard, slippery, and far from those he loves. He makes the leap of faith, and is so close he can taste it — a world that is cushy, full of people he loves.

He just didn’t realize the transition would be so hard, for in between drug use and recovery, lies a bottomless pit of withdraw. He’s stuck in this transition, and it seems inevitable that he will fall into the depths. He is expressing second thoughts at having tried to make the leap alone.

LOLcat Fridays — LOLsnake

We foray briefly away from the Felis Catus pictures into the not-so-wide world of LOLSnakes.

This picture is definitely a comment on the futility of the human experience, and how pointless it is to try to shelter yourself from the evils of the world. This member of the suborder Serpentes has often been representative of the devil, or for evil incarnate, especially in the Judeo-Christian psyche.

If one encounters this snake and is challenged to a staring contest, nothing you do will save you from having your face bitten. You win, he bites your face, in anger for haven beaten him. You lose, he bites your face as his prize for having won the contest. If you tie, you get the closest thing there is to a prize — he buys you a steak. But then, inevitably, he bites your face. It is as unavoidable as the fact that we all die. It is clear that this snake is teaching the viewer a lesson about how this cannot be avoided, and there is no way to win or lose.
