Hobbit news from a great mag

I just discovered SciFiNow. It’s an independent British sci-fi news and review magazine, and it’s great. (Its publisher has a line of several other techie review magazines, but they’re not connected to the producers of the content they review, unlike, say, the Sci-Fi Network’s rag.) I mean,
just look at that cover! We have Mulder and Scully doing their serious pose, Brendan Fraser doing his hot pose from the silly new Mummy movie, two Daleks, Adama glaring at you, and Heath Ledger being…not so serious. And they cast their net even wider than that: the issue pictured here has a lengthy profile of Heinlein that includes a bio and an analysis of his influence on the genre. A puffy advertising rag it’s not; they’ll trash something when it deserves it. Torchwood, for example, particularly its first season, gets mocked as the childish mess it is. (Really, orgasmic energy? Fairies in the garden? Captain Jack isn’t a serious or interesting enough character to play this menagerie off with any wit, like the Doctor would.)
The issue also has some fantastic news about the Hobbit movie. Ian McKellan will be back as Gandalf and Andy Serkis will be back as Gollum. Peter Jackson, of course, is producing, but more importantly: Guillermo del Toro is directing! Let me be clear about this: The director of Pan’s Labyrinth (and Hellboy, but let’s forget that) is doing a Tolkien film. Del Toro also produced The Orphanage, and that film and Pan’s Labyrinth share the same bleak mood and unreliable (but not dishonest)-narrator storytelling—and brilliance in visual design of the perhaps imaginary characters—that will be perfect for The Hobbit. That he’ll make the goblins, and Beorn, and the spiders look sufficiently menacing and creepy I have no doubt, but it’s that narration where you don’t know what’s real and what’s only in the narrator’s fevered imagination that’s exactly appropriate. The difference in tone between the childlike Hobbit and the more sober, epic Lord of the Rings (except for the first couple chapters, which are still centered on Bilbo), due in reality to Tolkien’s decision to connect his kids’ book to the larger mythos he had already created, is usually retconned by considering The Hobbit as Bilbo’s after-the-fact recollections of his first adventure, taking into consideration Bilbo’s propensity to exaggerate and show off. Thus we’re never sure whether some of the more outlandish creatures he meets (giants in the mountains and talking birds, for example) are to be taken as a literal part of Tolkien’s universe, or whether they’re just Bilbo’s embellishments, lapped up by the rustic, inward-looking hobbits of the Shire. The choice of del Toro to direct suggests that Jackson gets this important element of the story and wants that uncertainty to be a fundamental part of the narrative. Ironically, under del Toro’s direction, The Hobbit could achieve a depth and level of nuance never achieved in Jackson’s trilogy.
As much as I hate to admit it, I do want to go see Hellboy II only because of what Del Toro has learned since Pan’s Labyrinth. The previews make the visuals look really amazing, and after I heard Terry Gross interview Del Toro on Fresh Air, I’m really intrigued by him.

Whadaya mean, what he’s learned since Pan’s Labyrinth? I thought that was a pretty close to perfect example of the suspense/fantasy genre he’s developing.
Hellboy II = blah. There’s a total rip-off of the creature with only a mouth on its head from Pan’s Labyrinth, and the mixing of the modern world (city streets and such) with the fantastical visions from Del Toro is really jarring. Like silly-jarring. Oh and there’s an annoying “don’t drop the baby ZOMG!” moment.
Plus, once you’ve seen one CGI-laden crazy dreamscape world, the others just look the same with a few eyes and tentacles rearranged. Computer graphics just aren’t scary or wondrous anymore. The Orphanage was different, of course; he relied very little on CGI and when he did use it, he used it to compliment some other scary visual. At least from what I remember.
All that said, I’m not particularly excited to see The Hobbit. What do I have to look forward to? Crazier creatures? More talking animals? I hate talking animals!
Okay, maybe the story will save it. But it’d better be funny, because these fantasy movies are starting to feel undeservedly self-important. Like when they’re saving the world every other day from mythical things that don’t even have a good symbolic foothold in our world. I gorged myself on that with Buffy the Vampire Slayer (and at least that was funny).
(I realize all this doubles as a good criticism of most comic book movies; well, yeah, I agree. Fantastic Four, Punisher, Hulk haven’t even grabbed my attention enough to watch them, and Iron Man was only good because I have a crush on Downey Jr., and of course Batman is self-important but there are good reasons to like that movie. I also hated the last Superman. On the whole, if you present me a comic book movie I probably don’t like it.)
Well, a lot of the humor comes from the prim, strait-laced homebody Bilbo getting spontaneously whisked away on a fantastic adventure by forces beyond his control and then carping about it. It’s the fish-out-of-water thing, except with dwarves and a wizard. It was a tolerable bit of schtick in the beginning of the Fellowship movie, especially in the extended edition, and I imagine it’ll be used to similar effect here.
We also get a look at the wood-elf tribe that Legolas comes from. They’re kind of the blue-collar counterparts to the airy-fairy ones down in Lothlórien (where Cate Blanchett lives), so that’ll be fun to see.
Also, there’s a dragon.
Well, if there’s a dragon, I’m sold.
(Ah, who am I kidding; if I went to see Narnia 2 it’s candy from baby to get me to see The Hobbit.)
